At around 75 years old, Southern 8202 is next in our series highlighting the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s Places in Peril. In our case, it’s some of our collection, not the museum. We’ve plenty to preserve and seek your support for this little workhorse.

Built circa 1950 by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, the SW-7 served the Georgia, Southern & Florida RR for decades, being donated to the Museum in 1982. It’s a crowd-pleasing favorite that features a 1,200 horsepower 567A engine.

Painted in Southern’s scheme, 8202 serves as backup power to our train rides. It looks pretty good, but the surfaces are starting to show their age, and our crew suspects a traction motor may be on its way to failure. That’s going to be an investment.

8202 will need some time in the shop. Our crew is creating an inspection pit to ease the maintenance of this and other locomotives in our collection. We invite you to join us as we prepare the museum for future generations.
