SUMMARY:Second Thursday Preschool Program - Miniature Trains
DESCRIPTION:Second Thursday Preschooler Event –The second Thursday of each month from 10:30 AM-12:05 PM\, we invite you and your preschooler to “get on board” for the Southeastern Railway Museum’s special monthly preschool program! \nThis is an interactive educational program that allows the parent (or grandparent!) and child to participate together in activities related to the vehicle of the month. \nEach month\, the program focuses on a different vehicle or method of transportation. There are 5 components to the program that revolve around the vehicle of the month: game\, story/song\, activity\, craft\, and when available\, the actual “vehicle of the month” for children to see and experience. Each component lasts 15 minutes. The components will be facilitated by the museum’s Education Conductors. Second Thursday is perfect for your 2 to 4-year-old. \nIn May 2019\, we’ll be exploring: miniature trains! Our “park train” was made by the Miniature Train Company in 1957 for the Birmingham Zoo. \nThe cost is $10 per participating child. One adult is free per participating child; additional adults are $12. To attend\, check-in at the ticket counter before 10:20 AM on the second Thursday of any month. The program is limited to the first 75 children participants (and their accompanying adults) and we strongly encourage signing up in advance. Advance ticket sales will cut off at 8 pm the day before (Wednesday night). If the event fills up or sells out online\, there will NOT be onsite sales on Thursday. Train rides may be purchased online or when you arrive at the museum. DESCRIPTION:     \nThe Southeastern Railway Museum’s Fifth Annual Fast Track 5k will be held on Saturday\, May 11\, 2019. The race will start at 8:00 am near Downtown Duluth’s Town Green. Proceeds of the race will benefit the education and equipment restoration and conservation programs of the Museum. The event is co-sponsored by the City of Duluth. \nEvent Details \n\nThis is a USATF certified race\, Peachtree Road Race pre-qualifier\, Run & See Georgia Grand Prix event and is chip timed!\nRunners and walkers of all skill levels\, children in strollers and pets on leashes are welcome.\nFree admission to the Museum on the day of the race to those with a race number + 4 family members or friends (train rides require a separate charge).\nEarly packet pick-up at Big Peach Running Co \, 320 Town Center\, Suwanee\, GA 30024. Noon to 8:00 pm.\, Thursday\, May 9.\nPacket pick-up day of the race beginning at 6:30 am.\nFood and beverages at the finish line for registered runners.\nT shirts to all pre registered runners. DESCRIPTION:If your child is interested in trains or model railroading\, come join us for a fun and enriching 5-day summer camp at the Southeastern Railway Museum. The theme for 2019 is En-Gauging With Trains. \nCheck out the tri-fold brochure! \nDuring camp\, young rail enthusiasts will learn about different scales and gauges of trains and model railroads. Campers will get up close with N-scale model railroads\, full-size standard gauge trains\, and everything in between! This unique experience will introduce young minds to a lifelong hobby of model railroading and differences in scale. Your child will also take a ride on two operating trains as part of their rail education. Children may bring their own HO- scale models to run on the Museum’s new fully-decorated layout. \nOur camp is for ages 4 to 12. Campers will divide into three different age groups during the program. Children must be 4 years old at the start of the camp and no older than 12 by the end of the camp. On the last day of camp\, we invite parents and family members to join us for a graduation ceremony and a train ride for everyone. \nOur 2019 Summer Railway Camp dates are:\nJune 17-21\nJuly 22-26 \nRegistration\nRegistration is OPEN! DESCRIPTION:Trains\, Trucks & Tractors\nDozens of antique tractors and vehicles will be front and center during the Southeastern Railway Museum’s “Trains\, Trucks & Tractors.” The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday\, Aug. 2\, Saturday\, Aug. 3\, and Sunday\, Aug. 4. Participants will showcase antique tractors and vehicles not generally on display at the museum included with museum admission. Food\, train rides\, hayrides and rides on the museum’s restored antique handcar will be available for guests to purchase. Special exhibits are included in regular museum admission. \nMusical entertainment from 11 – 2 each day. Musical guests include: \n\nPhil Griffin on Friday\, Aug. 2\nYoung Again Band on Saturday\, Aug. 3\nAndy and Amanda on Sunday\, Aug. 4\n\nVisiting exhibits will arrive and depart at different times (so each day has unique exhibits). DESCRIPTION:The Southeastern Railway Museum is hosting the Georgia Street Rod Association (GSRA) Rods & Rails Meeting on Saturday\, Aug. 10. The event is held in addition to the museum’s regular hours. \nGSRA members will drive their cars — including muscle cars\, classics\, customs\, imports\, trucks\, sports cars and street and rat rods — to the museum starting at 10 a.m. Members plan on spending the morning touring the facilities and train collection. \nGSRA is a statewide association of more than 600 vehicle enthusiasts. Their mission is to promote safety\, awareness\, and activities for all automotive hobbyists. DESCRIPTION:Click here to buy tickets. \nThe Southeastern Railway Museum will host its annual homeschool event on Sept. 26. This year’s theme is Riding the Rails. \nHomeschool families\, led by the museum’s education conductors in groups of 22\, will explore trains\, subways\, streetcars\, and more through hands-on experiences\, activities\, crafts\, and stories. \nParticipants will explore six stations. Children will learn about rail gauges\, track and train safety\, get a craft\, an audio/visual presentation\, model railroading and train vocabulary\, park train ride and meet and hear a real CSX railroad police officer. \nTickets at $9. Each family member needs a ticket to participate (adults and children). Tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be available the day of the event. Tickets are not transferable between time slots. Once purchased\, tickets cannot be exchanged for another time slot. \nAfter the program\, attendees are welcome to stay and visit the museum on your own. You can bring a picnic lunch and eat here with all your homeschool families and friends at our covered picnic area. \nThe program is ideal for ages 4-12. Children under 2 years of age are free. DESCRIPTION:The Southeastern Railway Museum will showcase the Georgia & Tennessee Railroad during their annual Model Railroad Days event from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Nov. 2-3. The superbly detailed HO layout represents railroading in the Southeast during the steam-to-diesel era. It features a multi-level 3.3 scale mile mainline and fully automated operational vignettes designed to capture the imagery of iron ore mining in the early 1950s. \nNWGA T-TRAK (N)\, North Georgia Modurail (HO) and Atlanta Interlocking Model Railroaders (HO) will also be on hand to showcase layouts of multiple scales. These local clubs\, comprised of the best modelers from around the area\, will operate classic trains and conduct clinics on modeling techniques: \nSaturday\, Nov. 2: \n\n11 a.m.: Hands-on DCC (Dave Koch)\n1 p.m.: Weathering (Tom Davey)\n3 p.m.: Hands-on DCC (Dave Koch)\n\nSunday\, Nov. 3: \n\n11 a.m.: Hands-on DCC (Dave Koch)\n1 p.m.: Dead Rail – Scale Operation Without Power (John Bacon)\n3 p.m.: Hands-On DCC (Dave Koch)\n\n“Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum” is a sprawling 35-acre home to more than 90 pieces of historic railroad equipment\, buses\, and artifacts that bring to life the region’s transportation history. \nMany of the historic railroad cars and locomotives on display are open for guests to climb aboard and explore. Visitors can buy tickets to ride aboard a vintage caboose or in the cab of full-size switching engine. Visit the original depot from the City of Duluth and take the kids for a ride on the park train. \nAdmission is $10 for adults\, $8 for seniors 65 and older and $7 for children between the ages of two and 12 years old. DESCRIPTION:The Antique Typewriter Collectors will hold their annual Southeastern Typewriter Meeting on Jan. 25 at the Southeastern Railway Museum. The organization will display a variety of typewriters to type on. There will be an area set aside for rare\, antique\, custom and unusual typewriters. Members will offer basic typewriter repair\, adjustments and ribbons as needed. \n \nNearly Normal String Band to Perform \nThe Nearly Normal String Band\, consisting of husband and wife team Viva and Neil Araki\, will be performing during the event. They play multiple acoustic instruments in several styles\, including blues\, bluegrass\, Celtic\, 60s folk and old-time Appalachian. \nThe duo met playing music\, and when they merged their lives and instruments in marriage\, they celebrated with an all-day pickin’ party for their friends \nThe band plays at State Parks\, farmers’ markets\, coffee houses\, private parties\, weddings and music festivals.
