A look at Southeastern Railway Museum events in early 2020

DULUTH, Ga. — The Southeastern Railway Museum will be hosting a series of special events in 2020, including the Steak Cook-Off, Caboose Day and the Fast Track 5K.

The Southeastern Railway Museum, otherwise known as, Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum, is home to roughly 90 pieces of vintage railroad equipment on a 35-acre site. This mission of the museum is to provide a fun, educational and vivid way to bring the historical importance of transportation to life.

Here is a look at this year’s special events:

Southeastern Typewriter Meet, Jan. 25

The Antique Typewriter Collectors will hold their annual Southeastern Typewriter Meeting on Jan. 25 at the Southeastern Railway Museum. The organization will display a variety of typewriters to type on. There will be an area set aside for rare, antique, custom and unusual typewriters. Members will offer basic typewriter repair, adjustments and ribbons as needed.

Steak Cook-Off, March 21

The Southeastern Railway Museum Steak Cook-Off is a Steak Cook-Off Association (SCA) sanctioned event. The SCA will be providing the steak for an even playing field for all participants and will start at 10 a.m. and go until 4 p.m. This event is family-friendly.

Caboose Day, April 4-5

The Southeastern Railway Museum will be honoring the history and traditions of caboose day and the individuals who called cabooses home. This event will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 4 and April 5. This two-day event will feature live music and fun with a special guest, author Todd DeFeo who will be talking more about the history of Cabooses and the individuals who called them home. The museum is home to more than a half-dozen vintage cabooses, including wood cabooses that date back to 1915 and 1916. These two days are filled with fun, history and a chance to ride in a caboose around the museum, pulled by a vintage locomotive.

Fast Track 5K, May 9

The Southeastern Railway Museum will host its sixth annual Fast Track 5K on May 9, kicking off in downtown Duluth at 8 a.m. and finishing at 10 a.m. The race is a USA Track & Field certified event and is a pre-qualifier to the Peachtree Road Race. All runners receive a t-shirt and are offered free admission to the museum, along with five individual family members or friends. Registration is $25 until March 31 and $30 starting April 1.
