Boy Scouts earn their railroading merit badge at the Southeastern Railway Museum

On Saturday, Sept. 14, 36 Boy Scouts made tracks to the Southeastern Railway Museum to complete requirements for the Railroading merit badge.

Howard Goodwin, the Piedmont Division scout coordinator, organized the program with the assistance of several scout leaders and merit badge counselors.

The scout leaders were in charge of seven stations that the scouts rotated among. Scouts learned about train safety, signals, gauges, scales and types of train cars.

The stations included locomotive power, Operation Lifesaver, car identification and a make and take station where the scouts had the opportunity to assemble a model train car.

The group steamed ahead from one station to the next until the requirements were completed. By the end of the program, participants earned their railroading merit badge.
