The Southeastern Railway Museum, in order to protect the safety of railroad operations and both the public and SRM Members, requires the use, understanding and compliance with a set of rules governing all forms of operations on SRM’s Standard Gage trackage system. In order to ensure this mutual understanding and compliance with our rules, SRM requires that all Members that operate on or about tracks (1) annually attend an Operating Rules Class, (2) pass a written examination on these rules, and (3) are approved (initial time) by a Qualified SRM Member through actual hands-on operations of passenger service, and/or switching service with the various types of locomotives and rolling stock. This includes working on track repairs, maintenance, and inspection, and mechanical work on locomotives or cars. We also  include discussion of safety rules, including handling procedures for accidents or injuries.
These classes and examinations, which together require a full afternoon, are offered on an annual basis, with opportunities for sessions for make-up classes or newer volunteers to become qualified for such operations. A PDF of the current SRM Operating Rules, and the current General Order will be forwarded to the registered attendees before the class.
